Slow and steady wins the race
As we near another important election month (maybe even more important than the last one), I'm again worried by the illogical, irrational behavior of some voters.
But I ain't talking about the Tea Party. This time it's the Democratic voters who can't seem to keep it together for 4 years.
When Martin Luther King marched for equality, he did so, one step at a time. The 1954 Brown v Board of Education de-segregated schools, the 1955 Bus boycott de-segregated the public bus system and much more. All of which finally led to the 1964 Civil Rights bill and the 1965 Voting Rights Bill.
Martin Lurther King and others, saw that in politics, to reach the rooftoops of equality, you have to climb the political ladder one step at a time. It's slow, it's arduous, it's demeaning and it's hard - But it worked. Other parties like the Black Panther Party, were tired and restless waiting for human rights and choose instead to use their own methods to further equality, not many of which included fighting in courts.
I find that Martin Luther King's approach worked best in the political structure of possibilities, while the Black Panther party showed the emotional state of the frustrated citizens.
The same is true today. As some fight for equal marriage rights, health care rights, and consumer protections, they get frustrated with the pace of progress and then loose hope and decide to stop fighting.
But if Martin Luther King decided not to fight, because the party that favored civil rights, was slow to adopt them, then change would have never happened. Instead, politicians would have been elected that would have removed Brown v. Board of Education and all other progress already made.
The lesson to learn from this is, is to vote for the party that is actually moving things forward, however slow they may be. We can still yell and scream at them to hurry up while we do it, but not voting, will indeed remove any progress already made.
